The Indian Ocean is named after India because of several reasons, including its geographical location
One of the primary reasons behind the name of Indian Ocean after India is that the country is centrally located between East and West Asia.
The Indian Ocean covers 20 per cent of the earth’s water surface. It is considered to be the third-largest of the five oceans in the world, spanning an area of over 70,560,000 square kilometers.
The discoveries of the Indian Ocean date back to around 2300 BCE, when Egyptian explorers sent maritime expeditions to the “land of Punt” and discovered this vast blue region, what we call the Indian Ocean today.
The land of Punt was located somewhere on the Somali coast. According to historians, the Indian Ocean was used for the earliest maritime trade between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.
Before it was named the Indian Ocean by somewhere around 1515, the ocean was well known as the Eastern Ocean.
